Discussion topic: Appendix numbering

Appendix C(M)draft.docx

DSG Meeting 2014-04-14

  • Paragraph numbering in appendixes should start with "1".
  • When it is desirable to have appendix paragraph numbering match up with area numbering (e.g., DCRM(M) Appendix C), the introductory paragraph should be unnumbered without the header "Introduction" (see DCRM(B) Appendix H).
  • DCRM(G) already utilizes introductory paragraph numbering starting with "0" and will not be changed; future modules should avoid this practice, however.

Meeting 2013-10-23

  • Best to have consistency in Appendix numbering within each manual.
  • DCRM(B) Appendix H numbering is commended as a model: an unnumbered introductory paragraph, with the numbering starting at '1' to allow for the appendix numbers to coincide with the area numbers, not strictly necessary but desirable for its intuitiveness.
  • The solution of providing unnumbered introductory paragraphs for appendixes is not meant to set a written-in-stone precedent for all future manuals, but is appropriate for this situation.

Meeting 2013-09-16

DCRM(M) Appendix C draft starts numbering with zero

  • This has the advantage of allowing the appendix numbering to coincide with the relevant area
  • DCRM(G) editors wanted to start their Appendix C numbering with zero, but the Steering Group asked them to change it to '1'
  • However, DCRM(G) Appendix E and H start with zero
  • Discussion ensued without resolution about consistency in appendix numbering between and within manuals
